HISTORY OF VARKALA



The very name evolved from an intresting in the mythology of hindu religion Hindu mythology is centered on the trimurthys,meaning three gods in the form of brahma,vishnu and shiva. Brahma is believed as the creator of the universe,vishnu the preserver and the shiva the destroyer.although the three of them had their respective roles to play and was considered equally powerful,Brahma pai respects to vishnu.
One day during a congregation in heaven,where Brahma was praying to vishnu in the presence of a number of devas, vishnu for some reason put sage narada in his place and disappeared. On opening his eyes,Brahma was dismayed by the trick an grew red with anger. To add insult to injury, the devas laughed aloud watching this.
Brahma,belittled by the incident,cursed that the laughing devas be sent from heaven to earth and live there as men and women.
Brahma took the valkalam (sash made of wood) around his neck and threw it towards 'Dakshina Keralam', meaning South Kerala. The place where it fell came to be known as valkalam. Through time,usage and convenience,its is known as kerala
